The question of text editors or IDEs (integrated development environment) to use with R comes up frequently in online discussions. The console that comes with R is pretty sparse and lacks many editing features. There are literally dozens of options to choose from, most of them aren't worth your time. Here are a few to consider.

Note: This list isn't intended to include every possible option. Each of the programs here is easy to implement, is well documented and has an active user base or support community and is known to work well with R. These are also all cross-platform, meaning that you can use them whether you're running Windows, OS X or Linux.

Regardless of what you're trying to accomplish with R, you should take a look at RStudio. If R were a GUI based app, it would look like RStudio. This IDE is specific to R, and is so easy to use that you should consider it as your default R console. Once it launches you'll see a text editor, console, list of variables & functions loaded in memory (your workspace) and a file browser. Plotting is absolutely fantastic with RStudio, and as a bonus package management is simplified as well. If you have little programming experience and are intimidated by the command prompt, then RStudio will make your work in R much easier.

Vim is a really powerful text editor that can be used for just about any programming language. There are a handful of plugins that make it work well with R, notably Vim-R. Vim has syntax highlighting and auto-completion for R, and can be customized with your preferences. There are actually so many features that it may take you a while to learn to use Vim.

Another mature and powerful editor is Emacs, which becomes useful in R through ESS (Emacs Speaks Statistics). Emacs also supports syntax highlighting, auto-completion and can be customized to suit your own style and/or needs. Like Vim, Emacs can also take some time to become familiar with.

Eclipse is a Java based text editor that can be useful for almost any programming language. Through a plugin called StatET for R it becomes a powerful R IDE.

A newer entry to this list is Sublime Text. One notable difference between this and the others in this list is that Sublime Text is not free, but if you have the budget then you'll want to consider it. This is a very easy to use and powerful text editor that is extendable and customizable. In order to use it with R you'll need SublimeREPL.
